My Green Suitcase

I don’t remember a time when I was not environmentally conscious. My first memory of meaningfully connecting with my environment was as a Girl Scout in 1962. I did not remember details so I did a little search back in time. I found that the Girl Scout Law asks that we “use resources wisely,
make the world a better place.” The very first Girl Scout Handbook from 1913 urged Girl Scouts to be stewards of the environment: “For in this United States of ours we have cut down too many trees and our forests are fast following the buffalo…so let us plant trees now.”

About 15 years later, around 1978, I moved to Los Angeles for a year. This was my first real experience with air pollution. The pollution created a thick haze over the city.

Fast forward to 2004.
