Les Baux de Provence is about 10km SW from the town of St Remy and 30km west from our home, Le Mas de la Rose. Les Baux is located in the foothills of the Alpilles.
The village of Les Baux is set atop a rocky outcrop crowned with a ruined castle overlooking the plains of the south. The princes of Baux controlled Provence for many years. They claimed to be the descendants of King Balthazar, one of the three wise men. In 1642 the village was granted to the Grimaldi family of Monaco, but is administered by the French.
Princess Grace visited the village with Prince Albert in June 1982, just three months before her death. The exhibition marks the 30th anniversary of her visit and commemorates the long historic links between Les Baux and the Principality of Monaco.
We were fortunate to be in Les Baux during an exhibition of photographs dedicated to her life. It was a moving exhibit and reminded us of how much she was loved.
