Stanford Milinga – Our Driver & Guide

Standford Milinga was our Asilia guide and driver for the first six days we were on Safari. He met us the morning of our first full day in Tanzania for our 4 1/2 hour transfer, with a game drive en route, to Little Oliver’s Camp in Tarangire National Park.

Knowing that our guide can make or break our trip we requested an Asilia trained guide. Stanford was excellent and extremely knowledgeable. Stanford lived in Arusha Town, so he was excited to show us his town. We drove through the main streets of Arusha, stopping at an electronics store to buy a mini USB cable. Which I thought I had forgotten but later found. The parts of Arusha Town that we saw were very much like other 3rd world cities. A couple we met at our last camp, Alex Walker’s, had stayed at a very upscale golf and polo club. So first impressions can be deceiving.

Stanford was born in Dar-es-Salaam, but went to boarding school on Manyara Ranch. His first visit to Ngorongoro Crater left an impression on him and he decided to pursue a career in tourism. He attained a certificate of guiding from the Professional Tour Guide School in Arusha and has since worked for various safari companies including balloon safaris in the Serengeti and also as a freelance guide, recently joined Asilia Lodges & Camps.

His favorite park is Serengeti National Park because there are still so many places to get away from everyone and be alone. He enjoys taking guests out who appreciate nature. When Stanford is not on safari, he often assists in teaching guiding at one of the tour guide schools in Arusha.

I highly, highly recommend using Asilia as your in country operator. I would also recommend using Marsha Carroll with TravelBeyond in the US.
